aesthetic cosmetic skin care procedure laser resurfacingRecently while watching the news I heard that Botox was the number one cosmetic skin care procedure in 2002 which in itself aroused my curiosity to find out more about it. Although we are not a provider of aesthetic or cosmetic skin care procedures we feel the topic is important to our customers and site visitors.

We are a whole person skin care company and know there are more options available to treat, correct and enhance our skin and appearance, and that’s what this is all about. Since we don’t provide these services we have no interest except to present the information we have found and hopefully it will be helpful to you if you are interested in these services.

Demand for aesthetic and cosmetic procedures by aging baby boomers that can revitalize skin and improve appearance have sky rocketed compared to previous years; this is true of both men and women. Too much time in the sun and smoking are the number one causes of premature aging. Antioxidant enriched anti wrinkle creams and nutrient enriched skin care products are very effective at maintaining and in some cases restoring your skin. But with severe damage, deep wrinkles, sun spots, acne scars and other skin conditions some of these cosmetic procedures may provide the dramatic change a skin care product can not. Of course only you can make that decision.

Our skin is an important indicator of health and in some cases can greatly affect how we feel about ourselves and how we think others feel about us too. There are basic principals of skin care to keep our skin healthy and prevent premature aging. The younger we are when we begin adhering to these principals the more likely we are to age gracefully with no or minimal wrinkles and damage. Trying to restore our skin at age 30+ after years of sun exposure and possibly other neglect can be expensive and painful. For some of us our skin conditions are inherited, it is in our genes; all the more reason to take care of our skin and bodies.

We have learned about cosmetic skin resurfacing and rejuvenation including dermabrasion, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, injections and fillers, laser resurfacing and intense light therapies. These are all cosmetic procedures that in effect can temporarily roll back the clock on our faces. They can improve texture, tone, smooth out scars, stretch marks and wrinkles, tighten, brighten, control acne, and more. They can also do your hands, neck, thighs and other parts too.

For the portion of the population that can safely undergo laser skin resurfacing and other skin rejuvenation procedures it could be a good thing. All people however, are not good candidates for these procedures and must be evaluated. Your physician or other provider will likely ask several questions and discuss your overall health, allergies, smoking habits, skin care habits, what areas of your skin you want to improve, what treatments are best for you and discuss expectations. There may be other information discussed during this assessment.

Since there can be complications from having any of these procedures I would suggest seeking the help of a Physician, licensed Aesthetician , Esthetician or other licensed skin care professional. Discuss your expectations of the treatment and the result it is most likely to provide with your skin care professional prior to having the service performed. There is no doubt that realistic and planned expectations will make for a more satisfying experience.

I was surprised to learn that there are health considerations before having one of these procedures done. For instance, if you have an active herpes virus infection (cold sore/genital herpes) you may have problems with scarring from one of the deep resurfacing procedures and there are other health conditions like diabetes that may be a problem. If you are allergic to aspirin you should not have a chemical peel or cream applied that contains salicylic acid. If you have been taking Accutane, an oral acne drug, you may also be at risk for scarring. To be safe you should discuss your medical history including allergies and medications, even herbs you are taking with your treatment provider.

Be careful with your skin; remember as we get older it gets thinner. Having these types of treatments too often can lead to your skin becoming too thin sooner than nature intended. Human skin is very resilient but it must have enough time to heal and rebuild.

Complications from these treatments can include serious infection, scarring, prolonged redness of the face and possible permanent skin discoloration.
