Dermabrasion is a cosmetic skin care procedure that uses an abrasive tool to selectively remove layers of the skin. Some physicians use a hand held motorized tool with a small wire brush. Other physicians prefer to abrade the skin by hand with an abrasive pad or other tool. Acne scarring is one of the prime uses for dermabrasion. It can be used to treat wrinkles on aging skin, remove surgical scars and tattoos.

Dermabrasion is usually performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. This is a medical skin care procedure and can cause quite a bit of bleeding. Dermabraded skin is pink in color for several months following surgery. Patients undergoing dermabrasion are asked to avoid sun exposure for six months. It is further recommended that sun be taken in moderation at any time after dermabrasion, since the skin becomes more light-sensitive as a result of the procedure.

Normally Good For: severe acne and other scars, wrinkles, sun damage and skin discoloration.

Issues For Some: Discomfort and downtime, which may last a few weeks, and residual redness, which may remain even longer. Scarring and loss of skin color from excessive penetration can occur if the procedure is done by an inexperienced provider. The risk of complications will depend on the depth of the abrasion, all the more reason to choose a physician who has done lots of these procedures and has discussed the before and after effects with you in detail. It also helps you to have realistic expectations of the outcome of this invasive procedure.
