The purpose of shampoo is for cleaning the hair. The market is flooded with hair care products and more are on the way. I decided to talk about shampoo because there is much to talk about, probably more than I can cover this time. First we will talk about the science of shampoo and then I will give you some additional information about the ingredients in hair care shampoos.

What is Shampoo
In general terms, shampoos are simply detergents. They are a different type of cleaning media than laundry detergent because of their application to different types of hair, however, you will learn later that your dish detergent and your shampoo have more in common than you think. Shampoos are used to remove excess oil, dirt and skin debris from the hair known as sebum. A good shampoo will perform this function while leaving the hair manageable. These products should posses rich foaming action and rinse out easily. Various forms of hair care shampoos are available from clear liquid to opaque pastes.

The primary ingredient of a hair care shampoo is the detergent, either from an organic soap or a synthetic. Vegetable oil soaps, alkyl benzene sulfonates, sodium or triethanolamine alkyl sulfates, sulfated monoglycerides, sulfated oils and nonionics are typical. The concentration used varies with the individual detergent and the shampoo type and will vary from about 10% to 50%. Shampoos usually include modifying agents such as opacifiers, clarifying agents, antifreezes, conditioning and finishing agents, sequestrants, thickening agents, proteins, foam builders, and antidandruff agents.

Depending on their functions, shampoos are used as cleaning agents for cosmetic purposes, antidandruff agents, anti-seborrhoeic agents and keratolytic agents.

Type of Shampoo Key Features
Clarifying Shampoo Contain heavy duty surfactants. Used to deep clean hair and remove buildup.
Volumizing Shampoo Add body to limp hair. Contains proteins that bond to the hair and plump it up.
Moisturizing Shampoo For dry, flyaway hair, make split ends look better, pull moisture back onto hair.
Revitalizing Shampoo Made for color treated, chemically processed, damaged hair. Uses a gentle cleanser and protects color from fading.
Dandruff Shampoo Contains medication that loosens and rinses away those flakes.
2 n 1 shampoo Conditioner included.
Swimmer's Shampoo Remove chlorine and other minerals.

It is important to design a shampoo with its outcome clearly defined. Desirable qualities are lathering in hard or soft water and easy removal of lather without leaving a residue. Safe for repeated use, non-irritating, chemically and physically stable and not damaging to the eyes. A lot to ask from any product but none the less expected from any good shampoo.
